Amongst other things. Unfortunately as a married man, some of my favorite indulgences are in short supply....Ahem...

Anyway, I was thinking about setting up some sort of A7 combo and then taking them over to Dennis Had's shop and letting him listen to them for awhile. I'm sure he would decide that they could sound better, and then he would start tinkering with the crossover, and before you know it, us Altecheads would have a new and improved crossover to play with.

The plan is to fill the imperfections, sand and paint them, and then apply some of these repro VOTT decals a kindly source gifted to me. Then the question becomes what to load them with.

Assuming I can get the 416-8A's, it would be either those, or my spare pair of original 515's. I'd most likely add a 908-8A/511 combo for the midrange, and even have a set of EV "baby buttcheeks" for the high end.

    Comments?

Hard to say on the 416 vs 515. Both have their good points. Someone here will have an informed opinion, I'm sure!
511s or 811s. I prefer the 811s for closer lsitening. If you don't have a pair, I do. Reworking the port is important, as well as adding bracing.

I don't think much of the orignal crossover, but I'm sure that Dennis could come up with something nice.

    Yup.

IMHO the 416 goes lower, and I just plain like it better. The 515 generically is slightly louder, but not as deep. Either will require subs if you wanna go WAY low. Which would make how deep they go somewhat moot.

MY fave? The "B version of the 416 with stepped mag.

Does the 515 have a better top end? For example making it easier to cross up high.

Have never run either past 1200, both do that just fine.

Hazarding a guess, the 515 cone DOES seem lighter, so maybe will go higher. Problem with either will be beaming, a 15's pattern narrows at higher freqs. So any large speaker is gonna sound like it has more highs ON AXIS than it really does. Off axis not so good.

My 515-8G's are topping out @ ~6k by ear, in recent manual frequency tests, entirely overlapping the 288, using my 800hz franken-XO based around the EV XEQ-808.
http://archives.telex.com/archives/E...-808%20EDS.pdf (LF = 12db/octave, if that's still the case with my mods)
    * I should repeat the tests with the MF/HF disconnected to be sure, and observe off-axis in more detail.
This was one reason I'd like to try 416's.

That said, the MF is one thing I'm not particularly monkeying with atm.
